06 Jul Inspiring Wellness in the City
Now more than ever, it may seem impossible to keep a balanced and healthy lifestyle, (whether you’re pregnant, or have given birth recently), but there has never been a more important time to be sticking to that healthy lifestyle. With so much happening in our daily routines, we sometimes forget to focus on ourselves, not realising that we need to take care of our own well-being too. I decided to chat to Nicole van der Spuy, co-founder of Wellness In The City, and share with you – a blog that I am obsessed with, and almost positive will motivate you.
Tell us about you, how you started Wellness In The City, and the inspiration behind it.
Hello, I’m Nicole, lover of all things sweet, a model, mama of two babies a year apart (not planned), and co-founder of the health, fitness and beauty blog Wellness in the City. I’m a typical Cancerian – never sure whether to laugh or cry and if I’m not striking a pose for some cheesy German catalogue, you’ll find me on Bakoven beach with my two babas and my pooch Bentley Bear.
Wellness in the City is an aspirational health, fitness and beauty blog, which we created to inspire, encourage and motivate readers to embrace a healthier, but realistic lifestyle -especially now that I have children, I know how important it is to be practical and not set the bar too high.
We (which consists of me and my business partner, Marisa), saw a gap in the market for a niche South African platform acting as a health and fitness guide with honest, unbiased feedback and reviews, so we decided to combine our industry experiences and love for living active healthy lives, by starting a blog that does more than motivate readers to workout and eat healthily and instead inspires adventure, balance and living life outside of one’s comfort zone.
What motivates you every day to wake up, be active and eat healthy?
As crazy as it sounds, becoming a mom has motivated me to keep active and stay healthy. I know that in order for me to be the best mom I can possibly be, I have to look after myself. This is obviously easier said than done, especially for me who has had two kiddies so close together, but the more I make time for myself and do the things that make me feel good, the more it contributes to me being a better mom and a better person. I try keep that in mind every time I make up an excuse to not exercise that day or while I’m shoving a hot cross bun down my throat because I haven’t had time to make myself something healthy to eat. Also, what helps a lot is that I’m breastfeeding at the moment so I feel I owe it to my body and baby to nourish it with goodness in order to produce that liquid gold! Don’t get me wrong, I am not shy to polish off an entire slab of Cadbury mint chocolate, or anything sweet for that matter.
Do you have non-negotiable daily routines?
I have a pretty good skincare routine ever since I started going to Dr Nerina’s skincare clinic and this includes wearing sunscreen every day. I’m not a huge breakfast fan (maybe that’s because I just don’t have the time to make anything), but I’ll always make a quick smoothie with my Motherkind collogen powder in it – even if it only gets drunk at 7pm in the evening. I also make a serious effort to drink at least 2 litres of water during the day, but my absolute NON-NEGOTIABLE daily routine is pouring myself a stiff whiskey once I’ve put the babas to bed – trust me it’s needed!
You have two under two (kudos!), tell us how you manage to balance it all, while trying to maintain a heathy lifestyle too?
Yip, two babies just 13 months apart – it’s wild! To be honest, most days I don’t feel like I manage to balance anything – I just put my head down and hope for the best. It’s super overwhelming at times and I think what helps me maintain my sanity (mental health) is talking to other moms that are going or have gone through the same thing. I have implemented a very strict sleep and eating routine with both babies so that allows me to get things done while they are sleeping. I’ve also invested in a nanny as my husband is away during the week for work, so in order for me to get a few hours to myself to eat, sleep and work on the blog I need that extra help.
What are your top 3 health and wellness tips for pregnant woman?
- Rest – don’t be afraid to put your feet up and SLEEP!
- Work on your pelvic floor – especially while you’re pregnant. I would recommend finding a physio who can give you the correct exercises to do, because skipping, burpees and box jumps will be a thing of the past if you don’t! Haha!
- Take care of your mental health – it’s just as important, if not more. Hormones make you cray cray, so it’s so important to speak to people and ask for help if you’re struggling
For many (most!) woman, it can take a while for our bodies to recover from birth. What’s your advice for returning to exercise after giving birth, and what would you say to woman who are hoping to “bounce back” to their pre-baby bodies?
It’s totally doable to ‘bounce back’ to your pre-baby bod and I have seen mothers that look even better now than they did BC (before children). BUT, it’s a big BUT, you need to remember that your body has gone through the most radical experience (whether you had a natural or c-section birth) – it’s brutal. No matter how fit and strong you are, it puts a lot of strain on your body and you just need to cut yourself some slack and take it easy. You will know when you are ready, you just have to give your body time to heal. Start off slow – there’s no rush!
